Scientists at NHS Blood and Transplant, led by Louise Tilley, solved a 30-year-old mystery of a missing antigen on red blood cells. The antigen, which defines blood groups, was absent in a pregnant woman's blood sample taken in 1972. The discovery was made possible by a handful of other similar blood samples that emerged over the years.
