AMD unveiled its Zen 5 CPU microarchitecture at Computex 2024, announcing two new client platforms, including the Ryzen AI 300 series for laptops and the Ryzen 9000 series for desktops. Graphcore, a UK-based AI processor designer, has been acquired by SoftBank for either $400 million or $500 million. The company will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of SoftBank and may collaborate with Arm. Nigel Toon will remain CEO, and Graphcore has received a total of $700 million in investments from Microsoft and Sequoia Capital, with a peak valuation of $2.8 billion in late 2020.

Applied Materials introduced its new Applied Endura Copper Barrier Seed IMS with Volta Ruthenium Copper Vapor Deposition (CVD) tool, enabling chipmakers to use copper for wiring with 2 nm-class and more advanced process technologies. The tool helps combat the challenge of feeding power to smaller transistors, as thinner power wires within the chip increase their resistance and may cause yield loss. Today's advanced logic processors have about 20 layers of metal, with thin signal wires and thicker power wires.

Samsung has joined the 60 TB SSD club by releasing its BM1743 61.44 TB solid-state drive, featuring a proprietary controller and 7th Generation V-NAND QLC memory. The drive is available in two form factors, U.2 for PCIe 4.0 x4 and E3.S for PCIe 5.0 x4. Samsung plans to offer 120 TB-class SSDs based on the same platform and believes its 7th Gen V-NAND has the potential to accommodate up to 122.88 TB.
