In 2023, Go 1.21 introduced profile-guided optimization (PGO), a feature that allows the Go compiler to use a profile of an application at runtime to make smarter decisions about optimization. Teams at Google and Uber collaborated to build PGO, starting in 2021, and Uber has since rolled out PGO fleet-wide, resulting in a reduction in CPU utilization across many of their services. PGO is available for use in Go applications, including on Google Cloud.
